Missouri Attorney General Bailey: "We Can Lead" On Psychedelic Therapy

Writer: Eapen ThampyEapen Thampy

Yesterday, Navy SEAL Veteran Shawn Ryan released a podcast with Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. AG Bailey is the first statewide elected official in Missouri to speak in support of these lifesaving modalities.

At 49:30 in the podcast (video below), Shawn engages AG Bailey on psychedelic therapy:

Shawn Ryan: What do you – so before we move into your career as a prosecuting attorney - since we’re on the topic, I wanted to bring this up later - psychedelics are doing wonders on guys coming home from from combat the longest war we’ve ever been in, 20 plus years - and i’m one of those experiencers, did an ibogaine treatment, it’ll be 3 years this Valentine’s Day and i kicked booze, and it totally transformed my life, all in positive ways and so being the man that you are today you have the ability to make tremendous difference in the state and in the country - I mean what are your thoughts on psychedelic therapy?

AG Bailey: I think it’s absolutely appropriate that different options be made available and that everyone be able to make their own decisions about which option for treatment best suits their needs and produces the best results. And I’ve seen bills move in the Missouri General Assembly last session and I believe will be reintroduced and move again this session to accomplish exactly that. And you talk about the VA and I think the VA has let warriors down and there have been too many warriors that have not received the treatment they are owed because of bureaucracy and bad decision making and apathy and we owe those who have served in the Global War on Terror and any other conflict - those who have served - we owe them more. Again, I’m encouraged that President Trump has put a renewed emphasis on that and I am hopeful that they will make available a spectrum of different treatment options to folks so that again people can make good individual decisions for themselves.

Shawn Ryan: Is that something you could help lead the charge on?

AG Bailey: Yeah absolutely - look we need more veterans in public office I think - because of the perspective. And because of the ability to make decisions under the rigors of the situations we’ve been in, and so being a leading voice on this and many other different issues - the more veterans we get in public office the better off we’re going to be and the more we’re going to have these voices heard and more we can lead on issues like this.

Shawn Ryan: Is that something that’s on your radar that you’ll think you’ll participate in?

AG Bailey: Yeah absolutely - absolutely

Shawn Ryan: How would you do it?

AG Bailey: Well again, separation of powers matters to me, and our General Assembly enacts statutes and we as the Attorney General then enforce the statutes that are passed, and so helping with technical advice or leadership advice as bills are moving through the legislative process is one way

Shawn Ryan: Is that something you think you’ll be loud about it at all?

AG Bailey: I think I get loud about most things…
